Standard pallet sizes
The most common pallets in Europe are built to EN 13698. EPAL pallets come from licensed manufacturers and can be exchanged in the pallet pool.
| Pallet | Size (L × W) | Height | Own weight | Load capacity* | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Euro pallet (EUR 1 / EPAL 1) | 120 × 80 cm | 14.4 cm | ~25 kg | 1,500 kg | Standard for European freight |
| EUR 2 / EPAL 2 (industrial pallet) | 120 × 100 cm | 16.2 cm | ~33 kg | 1,250 kg | Chemicals, food, heavy goods |
| EUR 3 / EPAL 3 | 120 × 100 cm | 14.4 cm | ~29 kg | 1,500 kg | Industry, export (120×100 footprint) |
| Half pallet (EUR 6 / EPAL 6) | 80 × 60 cm | 14.4 cm | ~9.5 kg | 500 kg | Retail displays, small shipments |

How tall is a Euro pallet?
An empty Euro pallet (EUR 1) is 14.4 cm tall. The EUR 2 pallet is 16.2 cm tall.
There is no single rule for the height of a loaded pallet. Trucks usually have about 2.70 m of internal height; in practice pallets are mostly loaded to between 1.80 m and 2.20 m. A standard container has a door height of about 2.28 m and an internal height of 2.39 m. Stackable pallets must stay lower. Always confirm the exact limit with your carrier.
How many pallets fit in a truck or container?
Typical values for single-tier loading with 1 cm clearance per pallet:
| Vehicle | Internal size (L × W × H) | Euro pallet 120×80 | Industrial 120×100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-trailer (13.60 m) | 13.60 × 2.45 × 2.70 m | 33 | 26 |
| 20' container | 5.90 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | 11 | 9 |
| 40' container | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.39 m | 23 | 20 |
| 40' High Cube | 12.03 × 2.35 × 2.69 m | 23 | 20 |
Internal dimensions vary by a few centimetres between vehicles and manufacturers. For containers, the legal road weight may be lower than the container's payload.
Pallets in export: ISPM 15 and EPAL
In international trade, solid-wood packaging (including pallets) must comply with ISPM 15: the wood is heat-treated (HT) and carries the IPPC mark. This also applies to shipments from Turkey to the European Union. Plastic pallets and pallets made of engineered wood (e.g. plywood, OSB) are exempt.
EPAL pallets are made by licensed manufacturers and are recognised by the oval EPAL logo on the corner blocks. Pallet exchange in Europe usually requires EPAL quality.
